Founders & their story

Amit Kala

Chinu Kala

Chinu Kala’s life journey has been filled with struggles and challenges that would make most people give up. At just 15 years old, her father asked her to leave home, and she spent her first night at Mumbai central railway station. From there, she found a job as a door-to-door salesperson, earning a meagre ₹20 daily, which only allowed her to afford one meal a day.

After two years of struggling, Chinu found a job as a salesgirl in an apparel store in Ghatkopar in 2000. She also worked as a waitress in a local restaurant in the evenings to make ends meet. Her big break came when she enrolled in a makeup artist course at Bharat & Dorris, Mumbai, in 2006. She learned about the Glad rags Mrs. India beauty pageant and decided to give it a shot in 2007. She was among the top five finalists, which gave her modelling opportunities.

Despite starting a corporate merchandising firm in Bengaluru in 2008, Chinu still felt like she hadn’t found the perfect venture that would give her complete satisfaction. She finally decided on jewellery and invested Rs 3 lakh to start Rubans Accessories in 2014 from a tiny 36 sq. ft store at Phoenix Mall, Bengaluru. The business was an instant success; she made around Rs 1 lakh in daily sales.

Chinu didn’t stop there. She reinvented her business model during the Covid lockdown and began selling her products online through her website and e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Myntra. Sales skyrocketed, and her business took off.

Chinu’s journey from a homeless teenager to a successful entrepreneur is a true inspiration. Her dedication, hard work, and never-give-up attitude are traits that everyone can learn from. She is a testament to the fact that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible.
