Founders Roni and Rohan hail from Kolkata, where they pursued engineering studies. To raise funds for their business venture, they sold self-made LED lights while attending college. They recognized that women experience menstruation for an average of 30-40 years in their lifetime, with approximately 80% of them enduring menstrual pain. Traditional remedies such as hot water bags and painkillers were commonly used to alleviate discomfort.

Their innovation, Matri, is a portable, wearable, and rechargeable electronic device designed to provide relief from period pain within 10-15 minutes. The process of using Matri involves fixing two self-adhesive gel pads on the lower abdomen and activating the device for the specified duration. Tested on over 400 women, Matri garnered positive feedback, offering the flexibility of use anytime and anywhere. With an initial investment of Rs 60,000 and seed funding from IIT Patna amounting to Rs 10 lakhs, they were able to refine the product through 14 iterations, developing both wired and wireless versions. Operating based on the gate control theory, Matri’s unique selling points include a utility patent applied for the pulse pattern targeting menstrual pain and its miniaturized design. They obtained a test license from CDSCO and have applied for a manufacturing license. Efficacy testing in gyms and hospitals indicated that pain levels reduced significantly with Matri, from 9 without the device to 2/3 with its use.
