Castle Grant (Awagarh House), Agra

The Lost Legacy of Awagarh House Compound
The residence once stood on Civil Lines, now known as Mahatma Gandhi Road in Agra. It sat right across from the well-known Anjana Cinema. Today, the building no longer exists. In its place is what locals now call the “Awagarh House Compound.” The area has transformed, but the name still holds a strong connection to the past.
Childhood at Castle Grant
I spent my childhood in the historic Castle Grant, a structure rich in royal heritage and architectural beauty. Its elegant corridors and detailed designs reflected a unique blend of Rajput and colonial influences. In 1983, my father sold the property to a group of three colonizers, including Kavari Constructions. Shortly after, the developers demolished the castle and built a modern residential colony. Though the structure disappeared, its legacy still lingers in the stories and memories of those who lived there.
After the sale, my family relocated to Vibhav Nagar, a peaceful and well-known area of Agra located near the Taj Mahal. It offered a quiet environment and a fresh start, though nothing could replace the charm of Castle Grant.
The Royal Vision of Surya Nagar
Next to the Awagarh House Compound lies Surya Nagar, a colony with royal roots. My grandfather, Rajkumar Dharampal Singh Ji of Awagarh, developed and colonized the area. He named it after his father, Raja Surajpal Singh Ji, as a tribute to the family’s royal lineage. Today, Surya Nagar stands as a proud reminder of that vision—a neighborhood born out of legacy and love for heritage.
